In Summer 2020 a local metal detectorist, Mr Jude Maxwell, detecting on a south-facing slope near the modern Dunblane Hydro Hotel, found 12 copper alloy buttons that must have come from a military uniform of a Polish soldier.
It is possible that the buttons belonged to a Polish soldier from the 4th Infantry Division (part of the Polish 1st Corps) deployed to defend the eastern coast of Scotland during WW2. The Dunblane Hydro Hotel at that time was used as a hospital, and it is likely that the owner of the buttons stayed there for convalescence.
If you would like to learn more about the buttons and other memorabilia, please visit the exhibition at the Dunblane Museum.
On Sunday, 5th of November 2023 at 2:30pm, Robert Ostrycharz will deliver a talk about:
“The Polish Army presence in Dunblane and Sheriffmuir during and after WWII”
The talk will open an exhibition of Polish soldiers’ memorabilia in Dunblane Museum.
If you would like to see the exhibition visit Dunblane Museum during their regular opening hours. Click here for details.
