The Scottish Polish Cultural Association, Edinburgh, with support from the Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh, presented an online talk about the career of local hero Generał Stanisław Maczek.
Delivered by Jenny Grant, Postgraduate Researcher at Queen Mary University, London specialising in the Polish Armed Forces in the West, the talk followed Maczek and the 1st Polish Armoured Division on their epic journey from the defence of Poland in 1939, to the Battle of France, regrouping in England, retraining in Scotland, to the Allied advance from Normandy through Belgium and the Netherlands to Germany and, finally, Maczek’s return to exile in Edinburgh following the occupation of Poland by the Soviet Union.
Covering not only the Division’s battles against the Nazi war machine, but also the other adventures and challenges they encountered during their odyssey across western Europe – from culture, language and romance to the complications of fitting into a multi-national command structure – this talk will be of interest to anyone with even a passing interest in the Second World War, the Polish diaspora or other related topics.
